Ph.D. Geography West Virginia University

Hello! I’m from the United States. I teach International Relations in the Global Studies section of the English Department at Kobe College. Before I came to Kobe College I taught geography at an American university. My interests include international politics, regional development, and non-governmental organizations. I am also interested in qualitative research methods, and write open-source software for Q methodology. You can view all of my software projects at https://github.com/shawnbanasick

研究室紹介

Because my early training is in geography my research interests center on the social construction of regions and landscapes. In other words, I tend to view the production of regions and landscapes as the temporary outcomes resulting from the processes of cooperation and conflict between individuals, groups, and institutions. My earlier research focused on changes in the Japanese manufacturing landscape. I was particularly concerned with empirically examining the spatial patterns of regional economic change during a period when Japanese manufacturers were globalizing at a rapid pace. More recently I have shifted my research focus to look at the relations between Okinawan communities and the U.S. military. Okinawa plays an important role for the U.S. military’s strategic orientation in the region. However, Okinawan communities often feel that they carry a disproportionate burden as a result of the presence of the U.S. bases. The Japanese central government tries to ameliorate the negative aspects of the base presence through subsidies and regional development projects, but this can contribute to a development process dependent on their continuance. In my most recent work I have become interested in the spatial metaphors used by policymakers in reference to Okinawa. An examination of such spatial metaphors can provide insights nto how the role of the U.S. military bases in Okinawa is conceptualized.
